Miguel Martinez studied Music Education at the University of Art and Sciences in Chiapas, Mexico, where he is originally from. For most of his adult life Miguel has lived in Veracruz, where he studied classical flute at la Universidad Veracruzana. There he participated as the co-principal flautist in the State Band of Veracruz and as soloist in many different national orchestras and duo ensembles. Miguel recently received a certificate of recognition for his invaluable contribution to the flourishing of son montuno in Mexico.

In 2001, Miguel traveled to Cuba to take Latin Music master’s classes with the world-renowned musicians René Beltrán and Freddy Martines. Miguel has also participated in master’s classes in Cuban Son, with teachers such as Luis Ángel Silva Melón and John Calloway, as well as Latin Jazz courses with Professors from the Berklee School of Music such as Victor Mendoza, Jim Odgrem and Bernardo Hernández. Miguel is new to the Bay Area, but in his three months here he has played with Latin musicians such as Anthony Blea, Carlos Caro, Saul Sierra, John Calloway, Jesus Diaz and Michael Spiro.

Jose Roberto Hernandez, originally from the state of Tabasco in Mexico, is the leader of the Bay Area group Jose Roberto and Friends. After having studied ethnomusicology at the Instituto Superior de la Musica, in Mexico City, Jose Roberto specializes in numerous genres of Latin American folk music. He also studied at the Instituto Nacional de las Bellas Artes en Villahermosa, Tabasco. Currently Jose Roberto plays with musicians from Bolivia, Peru, and in Mexican folklore bands, and he has worked with various musicians from Iraq and Iran. He gives workshops in prehispanic music in the Bay Area.

Saul Sierra is a Mexico City native and a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he majored in Performance and studied with Oscar Stagnaro, Daniel Morris and Jim Stinnet, among others. Saul received the US Scholorship tour award and the Outstanding Performer award at Berklee. As a resident of the Bay Area since the Fall of 1999, Saul has performed with Nestor Torres, John Santos, Jesus Diaz, Orestes Vilato, Mark Levine, Mike Spiro, Jackeline Rago, Wayne Walles, Aquiles Baez, Anthony Blea and Maria Marquez, among others.

Carlos Caro was born in Havana, Cuba in 1967, and began playing percussions at a very early age. In 1983 he entered the Alejandro Garcia Caturla Conservatory in Havana and later he attended ENIA (National School of Art Instructors). Carlos began his professional musical career with the group CLAVE, which was made up of musicians such as "Puly" Hernandez, and the sons of the revered Cuban trombonist, Juan Pablo Torres. He also played with “OPUS 13”, a band which eventually became “PAULO Y SU ELITE,” lead by Paulo Fernandez Gallo, with whom Carlos toured Central America, Europe and Asia. The band also formed part of singer Jackeline Castellanos 1990-1991 tour and recorded the album, “La dama del son”. The recording was nominated for the “EGREM” award given by the Music Recording and Editing Association of Cuba.

In late 1993, he emigrated to Mexico, where he played with groups such as 40 Grados, La Ley, La Rumbantela and various other Cuban ensembles. Carlos also performed Danzon with the Mexico City Philharmonic at the Palace of Fine Arts in 1996, shortly before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area. Since his arrival, Carlos has become a much sought-after percussionist, working with established Bay Area musicians such as Rebeca Mauleón, Omar Sosa, QBA, Avance, Cubanacan, Candela, Ritmo y Armonia, Dr. Loco and his Rocking Jalapeño Band, among others.

Marco A. Diaz began his formal music training at age 14 at the Community Music Center in San Francisco. Here he earned a musical scholarship for both trumpet and piano which lasted for 4 years. Marco has a BA in jazz/popular styles from SFSU. Marco began his professional music career at the age of 17. Has played and recorded both piano and trumpet throughout the country with various artists such as Bobi Cespedes, Jesus Diaz, Carlos Caro, Pete "El Conde", Andy Gonzales, Fito Reinoso, Louie Romero, Miguel Martinez and many more.

Julio Perez was born in Puerto Rico in 1976. He lost his vision at age three and began to study percussion on his own from age 12 to 15, when began his three year training at the Escuela Libre de Música. Julio then studied multiple percussion and classical music at the Universidad Interamericana in San German, Puerto Rico. At age 20 he transfered to the Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he graduated with a Bachellor's Degree in Musical Performance and played with musicians such as Giovani Hidalgo, Victor Mendoza and Eduardo Urives. Julio has been living in the Bay Area since 2001 where he has performed and toured with various bands.
